I will be writing more about these little guys as well. We ended up going to my father in laws house and picking them up actually on Easter!! What a nice present. Oh, I was in HEAVEN!! I hadn't even met these little guys yet and was already in love. Anyway, he told Jerry he'd give him the pair for $40 and that we would have to bottle feed them.

He had been bottle feeding them because their mother had abandoned them after the first day, she was a young mother and occasionally this will happen, as they don't know that they need to nurse them. Well, he came back and said that Shot had two twin baby pygmy goats in the store that weren't even 2 weeks old. Our neighbor would be watching over them. Jerry, my husband had went to our local feed store, Shot's Farm & Feed, to get some supplies for the chickens while we were gone.

Now, it was right before Easter weekend and we were to be traveling to my father in laws home to visit for the holiday. Well, what a happy day when I went to collect eggs as usual and found my first green egg! It was a greenish blue and looked like a painted Easter egg!! The don't taste any different at all, they just make a very beautiful egg basket. Well, it takes them up until they are about 4-5 months, sometimes 6months before you get your first egg from them. This time we had gotten a mixed bag of chickens with lots of different colors, and with hopes that at least one in the bunch would lay me a blue/green egg.yes there are chickens that lay this color. My daughters were a little older at this point and able to enjoy and hold them a little better. My Valentine's Present for 2010 was 10 more baby chicks, I know I must be crazy to have been excited about baby chicks for my VDay present, right?! Well, once again so fun raising these little guys and watching them grow. They also have much more of a personality than I ever realized a chicken could have. The grow amazingly fast and start sprouting real feathers at about 1 week old. Monitoring their temperature and food consumption became my job. Once again, who knew! Once we got our first baby chicks, 8 of them, I was hooked! They were so fuzzy and cute. In fact, I think I became quite a chicken nut! It was so interesting to learn that there are different breeds of chickens, who knew! I thought they all just laid eggs or crowed and that was it! Anyway, there are different tempermants, colored egg layers, brown egg layers, white egg layers. On a side note, I hav e never been a "bird person", but knowing that this would be an amazing opportunity for my girls to experience I was sold on the idea.

My husband and I got on the internet and found this wonderful site called Backyard Chickens,, and learned tons of information on how to raise these day old little fluff balls. We started with eight baby chicks in the summer of 2009. The trend of families wanting to become more organic and KNOW what is going into their bodies is on the rise. After researching and educating ourselves on how to farm in a little under 1 acre piece of property, we learned that Backyard or Urban farming has become quite popular over the past few years. This has become a wonderful, wholesome hobby for the entire family. 5 year old obsessed with diapers.Along with being a Frugal Foodie Mama, I also enjoy backyard farming.
